Mario Hugo is a legendary graphic designer/illustrator/artist who has recently served as a massive inspiration for me. I cannot believe I had never heard of him before after seeing the breadth and awesome-ness of his work! At 27 years old he has already made a name for himself and in New York where he is based he has already pushed a whole generation of new creatives with his personal and arty approach. I love his contemporary style and originality and am so glad that I have come across him and all of his work, to check it out for yourselves over at his (incredibly cool) site here!
Little Printer
Okay, so I haven’t posted up in months now and I’m feeling incredibly guilty about that so I thought to give me a kickstart back into blogging I’d start again with this sweet little thing. The Little Printer is a creation made by the folks over at BERG (who have also made this swish little clock). It is described as being like “having your own printing press, newspaper and a dog to fetch it for you, all in your front room.” A wonderfully simple idea, in such a cute little package and with such practical applications! I cant wait to get one when they are officially released into the wild next year but until then I guess we’ll all have to settle with this video and the site over here in the mean time.
Live The Language
EF – Live The Language – Vancouver from Gustav Johansson on Vimeo.
‘Live the language’ is a campaign that consists of a set of 6 or 7 short films shot from all over the world, they show clips of what life is like there and were filmed for the EF International Language Centers. Directed by Gustav Johansson these little 5 minute wonders are stunning, they are literally one of the best examples of lighting, camera-work and typography that I have seen combined like this. Above is just one of half a dozen masterpieces to give you a flavour of what they are all about and if you like it (which you will)) head on over to the link here to check out the full campaign site.
Canimation Competition
Canimation Montage from Red Bull Canimation on Vimeo.
Red Bull is moving away from their current hardcore extreme sport division with their latest venture, the Canimation Competition! This is aimed at your animators across the UK and their are 3 categories that you can enter for – a CGI category, a stop-motion category and a traditional hand drawn category. The main prizes differ a little dependent on the category you enter, but they all have the same kind of theme, if you do win you will gain an internship at one of the leading animation agencies like aardman or cutting edge and some software complete with laptop to run it on. A very nice offer indeed but with the deadline drawing near your going to need act pretty swiftly! To have a more in depth look for yourself head on over to the link here
Bianca Chang
Bianca Chang is a young designer and artist based in Sydney, whats interesting about her work is that she uses paper to make it the 3 dimensional art! By cutting out the shapes repeatedly, making slight differences to each shape and then layering the sheets of paper on top of one another she manages to gives a very unique effect to the paper. To check it out for yourself head on over to the site over here!
Daniel Ehrenworth
Daniel Ehrenworth is a new photographer I found as a result of his most recent collection of work ‘Curse. Sleep. (That’s the Thing About Trouble)’. Some of the work is actually quite haunting, and the effects and lighting used in a lot of the stills create a very mysterious atmosphere. He has a lot of other work on his site but this collection is by far and a way his most impressive, to check it out head over to his site at the link over here!

Planetary
Planetary (voiceover) from Bloom Studio, Inc. on Vimeo.
Planetary is a new and unique visual music experience. It is an iPad app produced by ‘Bloom Studios’ and it looks amazing. I haven’t been able to get a go on it yet from what I’ve seen it seems to be excellent proof of what the iPad is capable and what programmers are capable of too. It pulls music down from your iPod music and displays them in an array of planetary awesomeness. Also, its free on the appstore so head on over to the link here to download it and have a play!
The National Bank
You may have heard me, quite a few times mention a brilliant musician named Thomas Dybdahl on more than one occasion! I have known about him and his solo album for quite some time but after looking for artists related to him I found that he had another side project as well. This little band is called The National Bank and makes some really interesting and different music – notably in their most well known song ‘Tolerate’ with various sound effects and electronic percussion. The band is made up of five excellent musicians, including a bass clarinet player and an Auto-Harp player too! Their sound is terrifically unique and I really haven’t heard anything much like it before (other than Thomas Dybdahl’s music, but that’s probably only because of his voice), to check out the site follow the link over here and enjoy!
Paul Smith posters
The fashion designer Paul Smith is celebrating the release of Tomas Alfredson’s highly anticipated new film, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy by creating these four amazing limited edition silk-screen posters. Each poster costs £100 but all proceeds go towards charity, they can be bought exclusively on the Paul Smith site and if I can save up the money I am definately investing in one of these beauties. To have a look for yourself and see if they are for you head on over to his site at the link over here!
Almasty
Almasty is a Paris based creative studio run by Anna Apter & Charles Bataillie. They are another one of these agencies that will make anything! They have worked in art direction, graphic design, animation, typography – the list goes on. Even though their body of work is varied it is not huge and there is not much for show on their site but what they do have looks pretty awesome. Playful pixels and funny little characters seem to be the way they play the game and it definitely works, check them out over at their site here!
WE ARE WILD
We are wild is a project set up by photographer Josephine Demme and is there to give up and coming photographers the chance to expose themselves to wider audiences. However, not only does the site show the photographs of the various artists, it also shows an interview/conversation too, this gives the site an edge and ultimately gives more information and depth about the people taking the stills. Its a brilliant site that’s promoting some excellent photography! To check it out for yourself head on over to the site here.
Leif Podhajsky
Gypsy and the Cat are one of my favourite bands but having been so focused on their music I’ve only just realised what amazing artwork they have! After searching around a bit I found their creator Leif Podhajsky who I cannot believe I have not heard of before due to the sheer bulk of work he has created! He has made music videos, merchandise, posters and dozens of album covers. His unique style of symmetry, repetition and incredibly detailed and complex art/photography is incomparable to any other artwork I have seen and he is well worth a look at his site over here!
Malika Favre
Malika Favre is an artist/illustrator I stumbled upon in October’s Creative Review. She has done lots of work for both herself and various clients such as the Creative Review and Wallpaper* magazine where she has become famous for her set of rather explicit typefaces. Her colourful, vibrant and playful work is stunning and I love it (especially the happy hamburgers!). To check all her work out for yourself head over to her site here and have a look!
F8 is live!
Facebook’s F8 event is streaming live right now! Head on over to the link here to hear Mark Zuckerberg talking about a new feature called ‘open graph’ along with a bunch of new exciting partners like spotify, netfilx and hulu to name but a few…!
The countdown has begun…
The D&AD have teamed up with the ‘Peace One Day’ committee and have set a brief for all creative’s everywhere in the world to raise awareness of the event and get people to act peacefully for peace day 2012. Those wishing to firstly aid world peace and also get their hands on this years beautiful white pencil need to head over to the white pencil site here for the brief and also head over here to like the Facebook page and have a look at the video too!
Top six!
ANOTHER top six! Some great bands up this week!
1. At number one we have Bon Iver and his new-ish single ‘Holocene’ from his latest album called ‘Bon Iver’. An amazingly relaxing riff, the whole album is amazing really, but this one stuck out for me – to have a look for yourselves check out the song (and the official video!) here!
2. Number two this week is Metronomy and their song ‘the look’. A pretty simple chord pattern but surprisingly catchy effect with some interesting harmonies in the vocals and an awesome bass riff – check it out with their crazy seagull friend here!
3. This time number three goes to Earth, Wind & Fire and their classic, September! Recently starring in an advert I looked it up and found out what an awesome some it actually is… to check it out for yourself head over here!
4. A slight change to the previous song, number four is Ben Howard and his song Keep Your Head Up. His voice, music and lyrics are all brilliant and it is well worth a listen at the link over here!
5. Number five today is Delphic and their song Doubt from the album Acolyte. Their sound is so unique it can’t be rivalled by anyone, their complex rhythms and synth’s are what make this song brilliant and it is well worth a listen over here!
6. And, last but not least is Obadiah Parker with his cover of Outkast’s song Hey Ya. The acoustic version of this song works surprisingly well actually and it was a brilliant idea to do it in this way considering the original version! To have a listen you can follow the link over here as always!
Autodidakt typography
Autodidakt is a website showing off Göran Söderström’s typography. He has made several faces for himself and for big clients such as ICA and SEB, his typography is amazing. Especially his newest face – ‘siri’. The terminals of the letters like a, s, h and E (shown right ->) are slightly rounded in both convex and concave styles which gives the font a much warmer feel that I love. To check out the rest of his typefaces such as meadow condensed (another brilliant font) and others head over to the Autodidakt site here!
Shin Dokho
Shin Dokho is a Graphic Designer I recently found whilst searching cargo. He has an amazing portfolio which is incredibly varied from the projects he does to the way he does them. His use of typography and new and old techniques are all incredibly well executed and I am amazed I haven’t seen him before! He has done a few books, ident’s and lots of posters that are very much worth a look. To have a look for yourself head on over to his site here.
Canon goes Hollywood!
Canon is making a ‘HISTORIC GLOBAL ANNOUNCEMENT’ this coming November! On the 3rd, in about a months time in hollywood Canon is throwing a big bash in honour of the world shaking news. Maybe another film camera, or a mirror-less DSLR – who knows? All I can say it is bound to be a slight anticlimax or at least not the ground breaking development they’re making it out to be… for the mean time, if you want to have a look at Canon’s current line up you can head over to their site here!
Ben Howard
Ben Howard is an artist who was shown to me just yesterday but from then till now I must have at the very least listened to his song ‘The Wolves’ 30 times or so. He is an amazing artist with an amazing voice, his song ‘Keep Your Head Up’ and ‘Further Away’ are also brilliant. His acoustic guitar and riffs are superb and he is well, well worth a listen too. You can check him out over at his site here!
The Happy Film
Stefan Sagmeister is embarking on the pièce de résistance of his ‘happiness’ campaign, a feature length film around the concept of how we can have a positive influence on our lives and make ourselves happier. From the trailer it appears he tries a lot of ‘experimental’ treatment from things like yoga and meditation all the way to drugs and medicinal alternatives. However, he has reached a slight dilemma as he has apparently run out of money… but you at your screens can help! He has recently set up a kickstarter page with a target set at $50,000! He has already raised a sizeable $12,550 (the majority of which came from a backer who gave $7,500?!) and if your heart is a big enough you can donate too, I know I definitely will be, it looks like a brilliant idea! To check out the actual website for the film head over to the link here! and have a look for yourself!
A Different Kind Of Fix
A Different Kind Of Fix is Bombay Bicycle Club’s newly released album and what an album it is! They don’t seem to be able to stay put with their style, switching from fairly electric (standard) stuff over to acoustic and now to this fairly experimental mash-up. A brilliant album though, not as consistently good perhaps as the first two albums but there are some real gems in there like ‘Lights Out, Words Gone’ and the single ‘Shuffle’. Well worth checking out (or even buying the album) at their site over here here!
TOPMAN – Lifestyle
Well the inevitable has happened, I just received an email from Topman confirming my suspicions… Topman has started a ‘lifestyle’ section. Almost identical to Urban Outfitters’ homeware store but quite a lot smaller, Topman has started selling Lomography cameras, film, novelty items and books too. Most of these quirky, well designed items such as the ‘Moustache Corkscrew’ I’ve seen before on the UO site so it’s very clear that Topman is trying to muscle in on UO’s fairly well established ground. It’s definitely a step in the right direction and one that was going to happen sooner or later although I can’t help but feel Topman could have been a little less blatant in stealing UO’s shopping list. I guess its always good to see these niche, designer (sometimes novelty) items get a break and I am happy that Topman’s started selling home stuff, to check it out for yourself head over to the site here!
try Helvetica
‘Try Helvetica’ is a Brazilian project that I think is run by a company called ‘noono’ (that’s the link on the page). It is basically a project where people send in photos of their hand drawn/painted signs and logos and somebody posts up a picture on the tumblr of a photoshopped version with its helvetica-ised version and the original image. Its a fun idea and is also very well executed and with a slogan like ‘Brazil needs more helvetica! And so (does) the World!’ who knows what might happen! To check it out for yourself follow the link to their tumblr here!
Rick Howard’s Lakai ad
Some excellent editing (and skating) in this new shoe ad for Lakai with Rick Howard. Playful, funny and an excellent soundtrack!
YES!
The new(ish) Lucozade ‘YES’ campaign has been showing off some pretty nice film and edit work over the past few months and I thought it was about time I put it up here. ‘YES’ started out back at the start of summer with ‘Tinie, Travis and Taylor’ and their black & white music, sport mash-up but it has grown into a much bigger entity since with the latest string of commercials and their feel good vibes. The website too, aside from a great design has a lot of ways for you to participate in the campaign whether you be a skateboarder, runner or boxer Lucozade is hitting your market. So to check it all out for yourself as always, head on over to their ‘YES’ site at the link here!
Urbanized
Number three of Gary Hustwit’s prolific design documentaries is up, Helvetica, Objectified and now Urbanized! The third instalment looks at the design of our cities, with over population becoming a popular crisis Gary looks at the process of how a city is created and expanded upon from the designers at the top of the pack to the ordinary citizens down at the bottom. If the first two films are anything to go by this should be excellent even if it does have a slightly unexpected topic. The film is starting its premiere in film festivals at a number of locations this week with Toronto being the first with the world premiere! To have a look for yourself follow the link over here to the urbanized site.
Emily Shur
Emily Shur is a very accomplished photographer, working for various magazines photographing various famous people all over the world. However, she also takes stills of places as well as people and this is when her creativity and talent really shines through. Her project ‘Wild Wild Life’ is stunning, the colours used and the subjects too are all very well executed and are very interesting. The quirky pictures give mundane items and sights a new breath of life which is very impressive to see and I love it. To check her out yourself follow the link over here!
PIXELS
PIXELS by Patrick Jean from ONE MORE PRODUCTION on Vimeo.
A brilliant video from Patrick Jean here, an 8 bit invasion of New York that engulfs the entire world! Some excellent film work here, lovely hand held shots and some brilliant effects too, I love the colours used. To check him out at his website follow the link over here!
Top five Print sites
There are ample amounts of amazing prints and artwork to be found online from thousands of stores all over the web but finding those one or two golden pieces can take hours of searching if you don’t know where your looking. These are five of the best print and art sites I have come across on my searches…
1. At number one is the Richard Goodall gallery! Based in Manchester it is a UK company with hundreds of original artworks, prints, sketches at a variety of prices. My favourite part of this site however is the music posters section, you can pick a real bargain here like this andrew bird gig poster for just £30! Amazingly good value for money this is a site worth stalking, to have a look yourself follow the link here!
2. Number two is the Pallant House gallery bookshop. I have visited the Pallant house gallery and it is superb I thoroughly recommend it to anyone living or staying near the area and the shop is just as good as the gallery itself. As well as the thousands of books on sale they also have selected prints of the galleries artwork and some of this art is amazing! The Paul Catherall prints for £65 may not be the cheapest of prints but for the quality of the art it’s definitely not overpriced. There is a large selection on the site and after a bit of a digging some real gems are to be found. Have a rummage yourself at the link over here!
3. At number three there is Bristol’s ‘A Little Bit of Art.’ This little site doesn’t have the largest selection of prints however the prints it sells are brilliant. A really good eye for art is clear from this company and not too expensive either! To have a look for yourself follow the link over here!
4. Now at number four we have a site I’ve featured on kakaaa before, ’20×200′. This site is based in the USA and updates its selection of photographs and prints weekly. You can get prints from this site for as little as $20, with sizes around 8″x10″! For more information check out my previous post and to look at the site for yourself head on over here!
5. Last at number five there is the website ‘Some Prints’ which is also based in Manchester. With A3 prints for as little as £17.50 it is one of the cheapest sites here with a limited selection of works that are right up my street. With graphical, simple and colourful prints I would happily cover my entire house in them and with prices as low as they are I might just do that… They also have a ‘free’ section whereby you can download super high resolution jpegs of selected works at A4 size for you to print out at home, very cool. To have a look for yourself head over to the site here!
Hold steady, point and shot!
These nifty little shot glasses caught my eye as I was browsing the other day on ‘Photojojo!’ The tiny thing doesn’t have to be used as a shot glass as they point out, but can also be used to store equally tiny things and would look great on your desk. At just $18 (£11) for three its not an expensive item, even if it is just a novelty! To have a look at the tiny, hollow Canon EF 24-105mm lens follow the link over here for Photojojo’s store!
Top six!
First top 6 in a while with some awesome songs, enjoy!
1. At number one is Thomas Dybdahl and his epic song ‘From Grace’ which comes accompanied with a compelling and simple music video. I posted up a while ago about his kickass flash-based website and I thought it was time to post up about his kickass music too. To check out the song for yourself head over here!
2. Number two is Yann Tiersen and her song ‘Mothers Journey’ for the film Goodbye Lenin! A short but sweet melody from the French composer. To have a listen to this excellent song head over here (I apologize for the videos lack of quality and its being a cover but it was the best I could find!)
3. At number three we have a band called Babeshadow who I saw support Florenc and the Machine a year or so ago and their song ‘Sea Serpents’ from their album also called ‘Sea Serpents’! Interesting vocals and a ridiculously catchy riff in this one, to listen to it head over to youtube for their official video here!
4. Number four is a new band for me called ‘Young the Giant’ with their song ‘God Made Man’. An excellent band and an excellent song. I’m also a big fan of their album artwork for their album ‘Young the Giant’ so check that out too (it’s the picture over there ->). To have a listen for yourself follow the link here!
5. Number five this week is a band who I’m closely acquainted with after designing their new logo, ‘The Hallways’ and their song ‘Hold Back’. I went to see them play at a gig nearby me and I was genuinely shocked about how good they are so these three are definitely ones to watch. To listen to this song follow the youtube link here!
6. Now, number six this week veers sharply in the other direction to the previous four songs! ‘Short and entertaining’ by ‘Jamaica’ is a song I’ve known about for a while but have only recently been listening too. Love it or hate it I think the electronic/indie mess is a good song and to listen to it all you have to do is click the link here!
Chris Milk
Chris Milk is a world renowned music video director and he and his buddies down at Chrome have concocted a very different kind of music video for the new collaborative song ‘ROME.’ Written by four artists including Danger Mouse and Norah Jones, ‘ROME’ is a brilliant song as is its music video but what makes this video special is its use of WebGL. What this does is uses your browser and your computer to generate highly complex 3D images and models in ‘real time’… essentially making your machine a gaming console except instead of putting a game in, you stream it from the web and load it instantaneously. Impress stuff indeed! What’s also impressive is the fact that they have managed to allow the code to use the graphics card and other components in the computer that were previously unavailable to them. To view the video you need the latest Firefox, Safari or Google chrome and to view it at a good frame rate, a good computer. Check it out at the site over here!
Bianca & Lenny!
Those of you who have been watching my blog for a long time may remember back in May I put up a post about quite a lovely little memo holder I had found called ‘Morris.’ Well, yesterday whilst I was looking around the home store ‘Heals’ I came across another, Bianca the Hippo! His golden teeth and shiny black body look fantastic and he is equally as awesome as old morris. But then, whilst searching online to find out more about him for this post I came across Lennie! He is a camel that comes in white and does the same job as Bianca and Morris with just as much style (if not more). Also, I have finally tracked down who makes them and more importantly where you can find them so if you want to have a closer look follow the link here!
Tran Cong Dung
Tran Cong Dung is an artist I discovered on my recent vacation to Vietnam, he graduated from the Hanoi University of Fine Arts and has had tremendous success since his graduation touring the world with his traditional wood carvings. These wood carvings he makes are often quite abstract and the piece I bought a print of consists of about a dozen bicycles lined together in motion with a miscellaneous fabric attached to the handle bar swaying in the wind. As strange as it sounds it does look brilliant. He also works in more conventional mediums with pencil drawings but his wood carvings are what he is really good at. To look at more of his work I found a curious little ‘multiply’ site which he has made and a few more of his pieces have been posted up there, so to look at that follow the link here!
CAPITAL
CAPITAL are a company based in the USA that make a very special and new breed of sunglasses, wooden sunglasses. They are hand made out of a variety of different American hardwood’s and are all unique as a result of this. They also cost $95-$135 (£60-£80) which is quite a lot of money for a pair of fairly high maintenance sunglasses, however in all the pictures I’ve seen they look fantastic. The vintage, quirky look and feel to them is truly excellent and I think its safe to assume big things will come from this small manufacturer. To check them out for yourselves or even to buy a pair head on over to their website here
I’m back!
I’m back! Apologies for not telling you that I was going to be away for a month but it matters no more because I’ve returned! I was away in Vietnam for 32 days and had the most amazing time, I climbed mountains in the north and had suits tailor made in the south, I narrowly avoided the typhoon that hit Ha Long Bay and ate a lot of rice. To summarise it was excellent… However, I am (as I keep saying) back, so my usual blogging will also be getting back to normal for those of you who like to follow it! I also hope to be making a few changes to the site in the coming weeks so look out for those as well! Thanks for reading and please do keep following!
The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog
What type are you?
I just came across a brilliant little site that was made to determine what specific type face you are. It was created by Pentagram, ‘the world’s largest independent design consultancy’ and contains a psychologist from the neck down taking notes on various answers you give from questions he asks. A rather surreal experience but one that shows to all those who thought of type as an objective subject that emotion does have a role to play. I turned out to be an ‘Archer Hairline’ which 46,436 other people had also been identified as, the second favourite out of all 16 faces avaliable. To have a look yourself and be analyised by the mysterious psychologist head over to the site here!
Foo Fighters – LIVE
Last night I went to see the Foo Fighters play at the Milton Keynes bowl… and it was AMAZING! Death Cab For Cutie and Biffy Clyro were supporting who were both very good, I’d seen Biffy before and am not a massive fan of them but Death Cab For Cutie I had not heard of and I was impressed! I arrived half way through the first supporting act and managed to get myself in to the inner pit which was cosy, to say the least. When the Foo Fighters came on the crowd, literally exploded, they started with ‘Bridge Burning,’ ‘Rope’ and ‘The Pretender’ which was a pretty good start and things only got better. Throughout the show they had 3 special guests come on stage. Roger Taylor (the drummer from queen) came on about a third of the way through to play ‘Cold Day In The Sun’ and a few songs later Bob Mould arrived to play ‘Dear Rosemary’ as he had helped the Foo Fighters produce it. Then in the encore 23 songs in Alice Cooper stopped in to play ‘School’s Out’ and ‘Im Eighteen.’ It was an incredible night and the fireworks at the end help show what a prolific and spectacular band the Foo Fighters really are. If you don’t know who I’m talking about (or if you’ve been living in a cave for the last 16 years) check the band out at their website over here for their music, videos and tour dates!
I Love You, Dude
I’ve talked about the brilliance that is Digitalism in the past with referrence to their song Blitz on the Kitsune album and, it appears that the electronic duo haven’t taken any time off since that last album and have been back to their synths and whatnot! Their new (interestingly named) album I Love You, Dude has just been released after the teaser back in April of ‘2 Hearts’. It is an excellent display of what digitalism can do and what they are all about; the album has on it some excellent songs like Blitz, stratosphere and obviously 2 hearts. Above is just a taster of the whole album and I thoroughly recommened you check the album and the band out over here!
FontForge
A few days ago I put up a post about Simon Garfields excellent book ‘Just My Type.’ Since I have been reading this book, my awareness of fonts and typography has massively increased and my interests in creating my own have too! I’ve spent a couple of days looking around for different programs to have a stab at it and it appears that there is not really much out there. The most well known and obvious choice would be fontographer however, this program costs money. Not as much as photoshop or high end modelling software but still north of £100. FontForge is a good alternative and is also opensource software so the best part is – its free! The user interface is slightly hard to understand but after about half an hour to an hour you can be creating your own alphabet with reasonable confidence. To have a go yourself follow the link over here. A little word of advice though, follow the links on the site to download the ‘fontforge-mingw’ version as it is much, much easier to download than the ‘cygwin’ version…
Cement Eclipses
A little while ago I posted up on here a book called ‘Little People in the City’ which, you may remember, was part of ‘The Little People Project.’ It appears another artist has been doing a similar thing, maybe in not such a fun and witty fashion, but a similar idea none the less. Isaac Cordal is a street artist who has been placing these small cement (not plastic like Slinkachu’s) people in towns and cities all over the world. The installations are quite dark and genuinely scarey in some instances and a few have more delicate and playfull touch but not many. It is a brilliant and extensive collection that Isaac has created here and it is all there in his new book ‘Cement Eclipses.’ The book is a must-have for any street art enthusiast and to buy your own and check out more follow the link over here!
Just My Type
I am just over half way through this brilliantly written book called ‘Just My Type’ which is written by the excellent author Simon Garfield. His wit and vast knowledge of the field provides for both an informative and entertaining read, he talks about everything from the Swiss modernists that gave us ‘helvetica’ and ‘futura,’ to the very methods that print and type were formed by centuries ago. He uses examples and stories from both the modern age we live in today (with Mathew Carter and Steve Jobs as examples) to mystery stories from times long ago… these stories progress through time as we progress through the book, however, Garfield’s train of thought is always very clear with his writing occasionally trailing off in a completely different direction to where the chapter started! Although he does always bring the chapters to a very definate and conclusive end which almost always have a point to them. His interesting ‘Fontbreaks’ are also a key feature of the book. These are small chapters that break up the main story/time-line of font that is the majority of the book and focus on specific fonts with their features and background stories. These ‘Fontbreaks’ are a very welcome and clever addition to an already brilliant book. This book has taught me a lot about type and has rapidly become one of my all time favourite books and for this reason I thoroughly recommend that you pick yourself up a copy for just £6! To have a look at his site for yourself follow the link over here!
Cartoon style fighting Kids
Some brilliant fun here! This video was directed by ‘MEGAFORCE’ and animated by ‘SEVEN,’ it depicts several small french kids play-fighting with their guns and some pretty intense gore animated over the top. Brilliant execution on something that seemed to be a bit of fun!
Top six tracks
This weeks top 6! A little late but well worth waiting for…
1. At number one this week I’ve chosen the Crystal Fighters and their song Plage! A unique and interesting vocal performance, some brilliant percussion and a very catchy riff make this song an essential to add to your playlist! To check out more of the band follow the link over here and to listen to this particular song follow the link over here!
2. At number two there is a little indie rock quartet called Little Comets and their song Isles. I’m not entirely sure what makes this song so great, maybe it’s the various stops or the punchy drums & guitar but it is just cool. Having listened to it quite a bit the lyrics aren’t bad either – to look at their site follow the link over here and to listen to this song follow the link over here!
3. Number three is a slightly more mellow track from Max Richter and his song ‘On The Nature Of Daylight.’ A lovely string piece and one that has been used many a time on the big screen as a result of its very cinematic, very emotional quality. To check out more of his amazing work head over to his myspace page here and to listen to this song head over here!
4. At number four is the song Heretics by Andrew Bird! A brilliant American multi-instrumentalist with some unique vocals and excellent style. To have a look at more of his work head over to his site here and to listen to this song follow the link here!
5. Number 5 is a classic by the legendary Daryll Hall and John Oates. I heard ‘You Make My Dreams’ in the brilliant inde film [500] days of summer and immediately had to find it and have it, it’s an excellent and fun song, one that you 100% must listen to. To have a look at the duo’s site head over here and to listen to the song follow the link here!
6. Last but not least is the band ‘I Am Arrows’ and their song Nun. An interesting title, i’m sure your thinking but an excellent song I can assure you. A slightly electric feel and some very well thought out riffs and rhythms from the five piece, head over here for their main site and for the song head over here!
Is it christmas?
Ah, how I love the internet… Just checking!
Chris Judge
I recently stumbled across Chris Judge and his charmingly child like illustrations. He appears to do everything! Books, adverts, paintings, animations, shoes, sculptures – the list goes on. He is a very talented man with an incredibly unique style. I particuarly like the look of his book, the Lonely Beast and for €10 it seems to be good value for money too! For more of his work and to have a look at his shop follow the link over here for more!
Hvass&Hannibal
Hvass&Hannibal are a design and art studio based in Copenhagen. Nan Na Hvass and Sofie Hannibal founded it in 2006 and they have produced some brilliant work, my favourite of which can be found in the shop where you can buy some brilliantly designed posters, very cheaply. Their style of bold colours and simple, graphic design is one that is very close to my heart and I hope to be snapping one of these works up for myself very soon! To have a look and be convinced for yourself follow the link over here for more!
Top five T.V ad’s
T.V advertising is a massive part of the whole advertising industry and a lot of good work is produced for it. Below are what, I believe to be, the 5 best T.V ads I have seen so long as I’ve been staring at that little plastic box.
1. At number one we have Honda and their ‘Power of Dreams’ campaign. Some brilliant footage merged with an excellent song, the whole series of ‘Dreams’ related adverts from Honda are superb and well worth the watch
2. Number two is an equally memorable series of advertisement, but this time from Sony Bravia. Their ‘Colours’ campaign produced some really amazing work and was especially effective as none of the scenes were computer generated. All of the footage shot, happened, and that is one of the greatest aspects of them.
3. Number three is a one off from Toshiba of all people! A chair that they actually launched into space and filmed for their new line of T.V’s. The slogan is ‘armchair’ viewing and I think that it is actually a very good idea and is definitely one of my favourites. To watch the actual making of the video follow the link here.
4. At number four is Apple! Now Apple have made a host of brilliant advertisements both artistic, like the one above, and ones which are also witty and clever, like the ‘Mac vs. PC’ series. These iPod + iTunes adverts that were aired in early 2006 were, and still are, a brilliant piece of advertising and really represent what apple is all about very clearly. Apple have made some of my favourite ad’s and I hope you enjoy the one above!
|
5. Number five is from Adidas and is one that I’ve talked a little bit about before with regards to the music which is ‘Civilisation’ by Justice. I particularly like this one not on account of its creativity or innovation but due to its editing and production. The quick cuts and timing are brilliant and it’s very quickly become one of my favourites.
20×200
20×200 is a company founded by Jen Bekman, a gallery owner in New York, and is based around a very simple equation that they discovered – “(limited editions × low prices) + the internet = art for everyone.” Simple, this little business helps up and coming artists by getting their work out to a wider audience that are accepting of new and unproven art… however the art up there is mostly, very good. If only the sizes weren’t so small, I’d be buying it all! Austin Kleon (who we have seen before) has his work up there too! I am very fond of the Sean Greene work along with the photography from Laura Bell. All of the work on the site is limited edition and is yours for the taking at a push of a button so to grab a piece or just to have a look around follow the link here for more!
Darwin Deez
Darwin Deez has been one of my favourite artists for a long, long time. I’ve seen him live and rapping down at Brighton and he is, in my opinion, one of the most awesome musicians around. Even though all of his songs are quite similar they are all very different to what anyone else is doing and with his witty lyrics and kickass chords he creates a very unique sound that is brilliant. To listen to his songs and get more info on him and his current tour go to his site here!
Austin Kleon
Austin Kleon calls himself quite simply ‘a writer who draws.’ He does quite a lot of things in addition to that actually. He is an illustrator, a website designer (who specialises in WordPress themes) and can also be a public speaker or a ‘visual note taker’ at your request. A very clever man indeed, however, he has created something creative and clever as well. His series of artwork ‘Newspaper Blackout’ (now published in a book) is, in my eyes at least, brilliant. He makes a kind of poetry by subtracting words from newspaper articles, he gets a sharpie and colours over all the words he doesn’t need giving new life to the newspaper. I love the idea, its simple and no one else has done anything like this and even if they had I doubt they would’ve made the witty and very well thought out poems that he has created. To see more of his work and have a look at his blog follow the link here for more information!
Eero Aarnio design
Eero Aarnio is a Finnish interior designer who made his name in the 1960’s with his plastic ball and bubble chairs. However, he has been busy more recently as well, creating a line of children’s toy’s and furniture out of the same plastic material. He is a brilliant modern, minimalist designer and I actually have to say, I bought his ‘Puppy’ chair a few years ago and it wasn’t actually that expensive to buy. His other, ‘classic’ stuff is quite expensive however he still remains a brilliant interior designer and one of my favourites. To check out his website and more of his stuff including a guitar visit his site over here!
GO BARBRA
Another little internet gimmick for you here. GO BARBRA is a tool by which you can alter Duck Sauce’s song ‘Barbra Streisand’ and the main lyric to whatever you want! Just write your idea in the box and Microsoft Sam along with a whole host of computer generated voices will sing it out for as long as you want! To check out my handiwork and have a go yourself follow the link over here!
Keep calm and jog on
Yeah, thats right. Keep calm and jog on or is that party on, no wait, I know what it is! Keep calm and eat cake, oh wait… whatever it is it definately couldn’t be ‘Keep calm and carry on’ thats just plain boring. Now I apologize if I got a little carried away there but I hope you see the point I’m trying to make. One good, simple design and like vultures everyone tries to swoop and cash in on it. I know i’m probably being far too sentimental about this kind of thing but it just seems wrong for everyone to try and alter what was and still is a brilliant piece of wartime propaganda. It’s ruined the meaning of the phrase and what once was a cool, unique and quite patriotic poster to hang on your wall (i’m talking about the original version) has now turned into something fairly commonplace and ordinary. Now, this would be okay if it was through a massive popularity boost in the original but it’s not and in my eyes, and I hope your’s too this is wrong. It seems immoral and in a way emphasises peoples inability to come up with a good design of their own. I mean, seriously?
Threadless!
Threadless is a little like GAMA-GO in the fact that it is a t-shirt manufacturer and sells mostly cartoon-ey style ‘tee’s’ however, it only sells t-shirts with designs that have been submitted by average folk like you and me. It has a voting system similar to that of made.com whereby people who use the site vote on t-shirt designs that they think are the best and the ones with the most votes is made and sold. There are any different categories of t-shirts such as humor, zombies and historical (to name a few) that you can submit designs for and there is a lot of money to be made if your design is chosen… $2,000 in cash a $500 Threadless Gift Certificate and $500 in cash each time the design is reprinted! Thats a lot of cash for one t-shirt design! So if you think you have what it takes to pass through the brutal system that is Threadless tee’s or if you just want a browse at a few who have made it, check their out their site here!
Google Chrome ad
Now, I know this isnt the most innovative or creative of adverts but that dosen’t mean it isnt a good one. Google and their latest creation Chrome, which comes in many forms, have been advertising the web browser they’ve created. These incredibly sweet adverts depict the story of various fathers sending their newly borns emails throughout their entire life so that one day they look back at them together and see how they grew up. It is all on screen footage and apart from a few youtube videos it has very few people involved and almost no dialogue apart from what you read in the emails. It shows off all the various features of Chrome, things like Picasa, G-Mail and it’s lighting fast speed. With fathers day coming up soon this heart-warming little advertisment will be a great inspiration to many dads out there and is a brilliantly smart move from Google Chrome. The videos above and if it persuades you to get the browser or if you simply want more info, follow the link here!
Space invader
Space invader is a french street artist (featured in Banksy’s ‘Exit through the gift shop’) who sticks up little space invader characters in specific places all over the world. The results are superb and he makes them both big and small and puts them in both high and low profile areas. He also does quite a bit of indoor work as well which is very interesting as most of this is done using rubix cubes! He makes portraits using hundreds of the things and the result are very effective too, even if you have to be quite far away to see them. His site is a little all over the show so I apologize if its a little hard to navigate but sift through because some of the work there is gold. To have a look at the site and more of his work follow the link here!
The Hallways
The Hallways are a great little band that are very local to me, I’ve seen them perform live and since they’ve been recording their tracks I thought it would be a good idea to post them up so you could listen to them too! They are a really unique three piece with three excellent songs. Though it may not be the largest collection you’ll see it is one of the best from a band this size – my favourite song of theirs has to be ‘Hold back’ with its awesome drum fills and vocals. To get more info and to listen to them for yourself click the link here!
The Facebook economy
So, it appears that Mark Zuckerburg and Facebook have created an economy that is exponentially bigger than the company itself. Impressive stuff! What this means is that Facebook has created jobs and therefore money that isn’t beneficial to, or taken in by the company itself, I am, of course talking about people like: third party app developers, data analysts and marketers. I read about this in an article posted by ‘FINS’ which is part of ‘The Wall Street Journal’ a while back and thought I’d put it up as it is a real feat considering how long Facebook has actually been around. Social gaming is the largest contributor with ‘Social games’ such as Farmville and Mafia wars charging for extra bonus content and the young suckers that are on Facebook, paying for them. These games are bound to make quite a bit of money as the benefit of making their games in Facebook is that the news and popularity can spread like wildfire. This means that a lot of people will sign up in a very short space of time and this is always a nice business model to have. It is said that there are now over 550,000 active applications on Facebook which is astonishing when we consider that Facebook have only allowed third party app’s to be developed since 2007. The majority of these are fun gimmicks that are free and make no money whatsoever however the one’s that do charge are clearly seeing a return. For more information on the matter and some info on third-party advertisers follow the link here to FINS full report!
GAMA-GO
GAMA-GO is a company that was started in 2001 by Greg Long and Chris Edmundson and originally purely sold t-shirts with kickass designs on them. More recently its been moving into other merchandise such as cupcake keys and guitar shaped spatulas but the t-shirts remain their biggest thing. They are fairly cheap ($28, roughly £17) and are made of good quality material. A while back I came into possession of their which showcases some of their best designs and I love it. They are punchy and full of colour which I am a big fan of, they are playful and there aren’t really many other companies doing what they do so they are fairly exclusive too! To visit their site follow the link here!
The iCade
You know when some people take jokes too far? Well those jokes dont always have to be bad ones it appears! A year ago on April fools day the guys over at ‘ThinkGeek’ posted up a terrific (albeit fake) idea whereby they sloted an iPad into a miniature arcade machine. One year later this April Fools product has come to life! On June the 9th they will be shipping out first orders out to the U.S. but theres no word on when it will be hitting U.K. retailers. Still, as soon as I can buy one (and have an iPad) I will be getting one of these! To check it out at their site and put in an order for yours follow the link here!
The Little People Project
Artist, Slinkachu has been leaving these helpless little plastic people in cities all over the world since 2006. I bought his book a while back and everytime I look at it a huge smile comes across my face at the thought of this brilliant idea. He has toured cities all over the world and I think he is amazing however, if you remain unconvinced, here is some footage of him in action in Italy. To see more of his work including graffitied snails follow the link here!
Laurent Nivalle
This French photographer, Laurent Nivalle, has recently caught my eye with his new set of iPhone photography. I have an iPhone and it has definitely inspired me and has shown me what is achievable without a big lens. He doe’s also photograph people and does automobile photography too! His faded colours and unique filters create the 60′s style you cant help but love. For more stunning photography visit his website here
Top five vintage stores
Vintage is all the rage at the moment and with vintage accessories and furniture becoming more and more popular and at high demand I thought it would be a good idea to list the top five places i’ve found to be the best, for you guys! So here they are…
1. At number one is the famous ‘The Old Cinema’ store from London. This shop may be expensive but for one off eccentric items it is a brilliant resource to have. It has most things from galvanised American lockers to 1960’s danish desks. They have three sections to their website, Antique, Vintage and Retro with various categories within them. It’s a very easy site to use and has some very nice stuff if your willing to pay out for it. To visit the site click here!
2. Number two is one of my personal favourites, ‘Elemental’ is again a U.K. based company that is very similar to ‘The Old Cinema.’ It normally has quite a lot of quirky, one off products and normally also, has a lot in the way of big furniture items. It’s lighting section is it’s main highlight though, there are always such tremendous lights in there from all era’s. From floor and parrafin lamps to chandeliers and desk lights it has everything you would ever want. It is quite expensive, much like ‘The Old Cinema’ but that is to be expected with this calibre of product. The site is easy to navigate and it is well deserving of just 10 minutes of your time – to have a look click the link here!
3. At number three is a slightly larger company that does a good range of vintage products. ‘Pedlars’ is an online shop that sells a range of products such as home and garden products and travel and clothing items too. Their vintage section is escpecially expenisve, even more so than the previous two but the products that can be bought are very good too. A big part of the vintage section is dedicated to ‘Bus Blinds And Signs’ which come in at around £225 each but there is also a large supply of clocks avaliable too. A good site with good products, even if slightly expensive it is definately worth a look here!
4. Number four is a company that are located very closely to me and I have bought actually recently bought a rather lovely looking ammo box from them at a vintage fair for use as a magazine rack! They have a wide stock of Industrial vintage items and a very sweet garden section that supports a number of various watering cans. Named by Theo Paphitis as one of his favourite UK small businesses it is really worth a look with a lot of small accesories that won’t cost you an arm and a leg. To take a closer look at their site follow the link here!
5. At number five we have ‘Pigeon Vintage’ which is a very, very small business with only a few items but for the occasional vintage spending spree it is definately a site you shouldn’t miss. They have a little blog which is also very sweet with some really nice stuff on it. An interesting little store but one that is worth watching, visit the site for more here!
Made.com
Made.com is a site that sells designer furniture and other goods at prices up to 80% cheaper that high street value… and the catch? You have to wait that little bit longer for the goods. Thats it. It’s a bit of a strange buying system that I don’t really understand, but if you buy something, it will eventually get to you. I think it’s a system by which they choose what to make communally, a community of people vote on what they think should be made and the one with the highest votes is produced and sold to those who voted for it. I’ve bought from them before, a brooklyn floor lamp for £210 off the high street price and it is excellent, superb build quality and it arrived in good time too! For brilliant design at next to no cost visit Made.com here!
Mayer in the palm of your hand
Augmented reality technology has had a real boost over the last few months and now we have our first ever augmented reality music video! Simply hold the broken heart symbol up to your webcam and watch the wonderful John Mayer perform Heartbreak Warfare in the palm of your hand. I am a big fan of John Mayer and saw him perform last year and I think that this is a brilliant thing that him and his team have managed to do. They have managed to work out most of the faults that normally bring down this technology and it’s a really interactive and smart move from Mayer. To check it out for yourself follow the link here to the site!
FCUK – You are man?
FCUK have had this advertising campaign going for a while now and I am in love with it. It has brought out some of the best photography and film work I have seen from a major brand in a long time. The idea is very simple, what they have done just contrasts and mixes up stereotypes of women and men which is nothing new, however, they do it in a very subtle and believable way that it makes it both funny, intriguing and fresh to look at. When passing an FCUK shop near me I saw the poster ads for these on the walls with a small booklet in store, so I went in and took the booklet which turned out to be absolutely fantastic. Pages and pages of beautiful photgraphy with amazing subjects, the stills can be seen online here and I thoroughly recommend you have a look. There is both the ‘YOU ARE MAN?’ and ‘You are woman?’ sections of the campaign with a collection of videos and photographs for each which can be seen here on their campaign website!
David Meskhi
David Meskhi has recently popped up on my radar and I am loving his work, both his black and white and colour photography is stunning. Born in Tbilisi, Georgia and currently living in Berlin he has a fairly large portfolio of work which includes both gritty, grainy war photography and portraits to very active skateboarding photography. He is definately worth a good, good look and you can do just that, here!
Papermash
Papermash is an independent company that sell products from independent designers from the US, Japan, Korea and the UK. They do prints, masking tape and even striped paper straws! My favourite part has to be the Japanese masking tape which looks very cool and i’m sure i’ll be buying some of that along with the equally cool Subway tape. This little company has impeccable taste and has very reasonable prices along with free postage on items over £25! A very sweet and ‘Cath Kidston-esque’ wesbite and one that I think ill be visiting plenty of times in weeks to come, you can too at the link here!
Pantone
I’ve been wanting to do a feature like this for some time, an in depth write up and history about any major company, agency or thing in design that I thought was cool. This has now lead me to Pantone which I definitely think is large enough for me to write quite a bit about and it also seems like quite an apt place to start. Stay with me, I’ll try to make it as interesting as possible but, as they say – practice makes perfect!
Pantone Incorporated is an American company based in Carlstadt, New Jersey and is best known for it’s PMS (Pantone Matching System) which is widely used in various different industries such as printing, fabrics and even the production of paint. In the 1950’s when Pantone first started (although not under that name) it was primarily a printing company, however in 1956 a young Lawrence Herbert who had recently graduated from Hofstra University was taken on as a part time employee. Whilst at the printing firm he used his experience and knowledge of chemistry and applied it to their stock of pigments and also their production of coloured inks. Over the next six years his ideas really took off and by 1962 he was running the ink and printing division of the company with a good profit margin, however, the rest of the company had worked its way in to a five figure debt that it was struggling with very badly. He therefore bought the company out and started making a few of his own changes.
By 1963 they were dishing out their first “Pantone Guide’s”, these are small 15×5 cm cardboard flip-books that display a selection of different colour shades on each card page. The idea behind this is to allow designers to ‘colour match’ specific colours when a design enters each stage of production, this little swatch meant that, regardless of what equipment was being used to produce the colour the manufacturer could always check that the colour was right. This idea was a stroke of genius from Lawrence and was quickly adopted by a host of people from different fields of work – graphic designers, reproduction and printing houses etc. It was also a steady return for Pantone’s finance as each swatch had to be replaced annually due to the ink going yellow-ey over time. Over the years Pantone quickly digitized it’s products with the realisation of the new computer revolution and recently a new, more modern swatch has been created in 2007 called the ‘Pantone Goe System’. This consists of over 2,000 new colors in a brand new matching and numbering system.
The ethic and design of the company was (and still is) massively looked up to by many designers and it had become a timeless, cool and cutting edge corporation. With the fame of Pantone building and building over nearly half a century of work, people started wanting Pantone products. The people got what they wanted too with the birth of ‘Pantone Universe’. Under this name hundreds of Pantone products have emerged from eyewear to bikes they have made it all. They have even made an entire Pantone hotel with themed bedrooms! From what started as a simple, humble colour swatch snowballed a multi-million dollar business and all I have to say is – fair play Lawrence Herbert, fair play indeed.
Page Magazine
Page the magazine is a product of Rick Bracho (the Editor-in-Chief) and the brilliant Mexican design agency Face. It is clutter free with no advertisements and is full of some of the most beautiful photography I have ever seen. The articles aren’t bad either even if they are in Mexican… They have only produced 12 issues and the current issue is always posted on their website, back issues are available but you cannot view them online. To have a look at their current issue ‘The Dark Issue’ and see more from them check their website out here!
Cardboard Safari
Carboard Safari are a tiny little company that can be found in the States over in Virginia, it was started by two guys Chris and Luis who “strive to design fun and fascinating products.” This they do very well with their Carboard Safari animal trophies! I have in my room a Buck Jr. and he is an instant conversation starter for anyone who walks in. Their range of deer, bison, rhino (the list goes on) trophies can give that room that little bit of fun it needed for around only £30! They are cheap, easy to assemble and great to look at, to buy your own and have a look at their other stuff visit them over here!
Weekly top six tracks…
Another top six with some excellent talent, here it is!
1. First up we have Foals who are a band that have been around for a while now, they are a group I heard about last year with their hit single ‘Miami.’ Their syncopated drum patterns and awesome guitar effects make it impossible not to listen to their whole new album – Total life forever. For the song click here and for more information visit their site here!
2. Secondly, I have something quite different for you now, some classical music! Well not so much classical as just piano a piano solo, a piano solo written and performed by Giovanni Allevi the Italian musician/philosopher. His song ‘Aria’ is just amazing, (even if slightly repetitive) the gradual building of ideas and layers in the song is trance enducing and anyone who either is or isn’t into the classical stuff should still check this out. To listen to the song click the here (I apologize for the video, it was the best I could find) and to see more from Giovanni follow his site here!
3. At number three we have West Coast by Coconut Records. A great little song with an amazing chorus. They sound a little like the band Phoenix especially the singer however the tunes they play and the overall effect they create is very unique to them. This particular song is my favourite from them and whilst some of their other songs from both albums are good, nothing quite compares to their stroke of genius with this track. To listen to the song click here and to see more from them follow the link here!
4. Number four is an old song but one I’ve been listening to quite a bit so I had to post it up here – CONCRETE SCHOOLYARD by Jurassic 5 is one of the best songs of all time. There is no real reason, it just is. The band have recently been featured on the game DJ Hero with their song, JAYOU appearing in a number of mixes, this has therefore won them lots of publicity with the younger generation. To listen to this song follow the link here and to take a closer look at the band click the link here!
5. Number five is the more electronic track of the week as it is Digitalism and their track Blitz. It is featured on the Kitsune Maison Compilation album number 10 (the fireworks issue) and is a brilliant song. It has a bass line that is absolutely huge and a lot of treble on top of that which they like to play around with. To listen to the song follw the link here and to visit their site click here!
6. And finally at number six we have The Devil’s Crayon by the band Wild Beasts. This very Indie band (with some awesome album artwork) have been around for a long time now and their latest full album ‘Two Dancers’ is also very good but this song, I think, shows of what they’re good at, best. To listen to the song click here and to see more of them click here!
Everything Everything
Everything Everything are a British Indie/Electronic/Rock band who are simply incredible and do it al.l They use three part harmonies, kickass guitar riffs and, in some cases, very, very in depth lyrics. Their debut album Man Alive was released on the 30th of August 2010 and hit number 17 here in the U.K! The three piece have also one awards – the South Bank Award and the Xfm New Music Award! A very impressive result considering the band only released their first album less than a year ago! They are one of my favourite bands at the moment and the whole of their album is worth a good listening to, also if you like your music videos they have an interesting film for their song Schoolin’ here which is just pure, bold, 2D graphics and I think the design of it is great even if the animation is a bit out of sync with the track. To hear more of this great band and listen to some of their songs you can visit their website
Sander Meisner
Sander Meisner has become one of my favourite photographers over the last few months. When searching for new talent and photographers I often find myself coming back to him and his magnificent set of photo’s called ‘Tunnels.’ He has a truly brilliant portfolio and if you havent come across him by now then familiarize yourself, fast. Most of his best stuff is inner-city photography of his hometown in the Netherlands, he has some stills of outer-city scenes but his city stuff, in my opinion, is his best. He experiments very much with shapes, shadows and different kinds of lighting which can be seen clearly in both Tunnels and Nacht. The use of colour is also present in some of his work however as most of his photos are taken at night colour isn’t drawn upon too heavily. To visit his site and see more of his work follow the link here
1.14 million pound Leica bought at auction
Four years ago in New York this Leica 0-series camera fetched around £290,000 at auction and it appears these things add value with age as the same camera a few days ago was snatched up for just over £1.14 MILLION, which must be some kind of a record. I can’t imagine the smile on that man’s face when he saw the return he would be getting on that investment, it is indeed, a beautiful camera but I am truly staggered at the amount some people have to buy these things with!
Kaaatweet & Kaboook?
As I’ve finally just got to grips with the actual site posting I thought I’d just put out a reminder that there are also Facebook and Twitter pages you can follow me on for even all the more kakaaa action I hear you all craving! The Facebook page is here, and the Twitter page is here! I hope you take a look and follow me, thanks alot everyone!
One Day…
I read the book ‘One day’ by David Nicholls a while back on holiday and loved it. The story is enthralling and gripping from the word go and is nothing like I’ve read before, it is well up there in my favourites with ‘The time travellers wife’ and ‘The lovely bones.’ This, however, is not what I am writing about, not the book alone – there is a film being made of the book which is very, very exciting! Starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess as Emma and Dexter it is definately not short of stars and the combination of these actors and the fairly indie director Lone Scherfig (the woman who directed ‘An Education’) I can picture it being a fantastic outcome. It’s scheduled for release on the 26th of August 2011 so keep the diary open, I can see this one really taking off! For more information visit IMDb here!
Sagmeister talks about happy design
This is Stefan Sagmeister talking about ‘happy’ design and his experience with happiness over the years. His witty speeches are very insightful and if you enjoyed the one above I recommend that you watch a slightly shorter 5 minute speech he made 4 years after filming this one here!
YEAH Magazine
I came across YEAH Magazine a while back and have only seen a few editions but from what I’ve seen it looks to be very good! A showcase of young talent from across the U.K. compiled into a small, short magazine with only a few adverts. The creators are friends, Errey and Stevie and the basic concept of their magazine is simple. They put out a theme for the magazine such as ‘age’ or ‘the scene’ each quarter via the website or in the magazines for young people to put fowards art, designs, writing and photography of their own for that theme. The best work is put in and credited and it seems to be a good way to get your name and work out in to the big wide world! To have a look at what their working on and what they’ve done in the past, check out their website here!
Morris the memo holder
Morris the memo holder is an inspired design from the Studio of Yaacov Kaufman, a dog/donkey looking memo holder that contains 140 sheets of square paper. I have one on my desk and he is the most practical and best looking way to remind myself of all the things that I need to do. He’s only £10 and is avaliable in white, charcoal and red and I thoroughly recommend him to everyone! To get one for yourself follow up the link over here!
A hunter shoots a bear!
Some more innovative advertising via YouTube now, but this time from TipEx! The idea is that a hunter is out in the forest, his friend his filming him brushing his teeth (like so many videos on youtube) when all of a sudden a bear comes out from nowhere. You the viewer then have to decide whether your going to shoot it or leave it, whichever one you choose doesn’t matter as the hunter doesn’t shoot the bear either way. Instead, he grabs the TipEx out of the ad next the video and erases the title asking you what they should do next… that’s, him and the bear. Now, there are a plethora of possible things to type in, (40 to be exact) from playing football, going shopping to doing it up against a tree… All of which are very, very funny. It’s a big win for TipEx as their little marketing brainwave appears to have paid off with 16,723,146 views to date on a budget of less than €700,000! (just over £600,000) To have a look at the video head over here!
Munich Olympic Posters 1972
With all the hype building around London hosting the 2012 world Olympics, here in the UK certainly the posters and advertisements for the event have been cropping up more and more all over the news and billboards everywhere. The posters are good, but it got me thinking about some Olympic posters I had seen that were even better. The posters from the Munich Olympics are fantastic, some of the best promotional work I’ve ever seen. Abstract art as the main image and ‘Olympische Spiele Munchen 1972’ in plain, sans-serif font underneath. There was also the more obvious designs also created by Otl Aicher who was one of the best German graphic designers of the 20th century, these were posters with pictures of the various sports in a linocut style and coloured in very vibrant colours. All this minimal design I adore, especially with the use of the bold, vibrant colours – the picture I used on the home page for this post is by far my favourite but at prices around £200 I doubt I will have one hanging on my wall any time soon. To see more of these posters I’ve found a brilliant little website that has a database of them all, just click here
Top Five Mug’s
Mugs, everyone needs them and just recently I have seen a few designs for them that have caught my eye. I’ve also been wanting to start a ‘Top Five’ theme for a while so here goes!
1. At number one we have my personal favourite, the ‘Moustache Mug!’ I actually got given one of these for my birthday along with the ‘Moustache Glass’ which means I have the entire set! There are varying types of moustache you can purchase including the ‘Magician’ moustache which is also very cool!
2. Second is a marvelous and practical creation from SUCK UK, the MyCuppa mugs! There is a different design for tea and and for coffee and on the inside they have a ‘Pantone-esque’ style colour chart all with a description underneath of what type of coffee or tea your are brewing. It’s very simple, just match the type you like to the colour on the mug, different types include ‘Builders brew’ and ‘Classic British’ and it looks like great fun! To have a look follow the link here!
3. At number three is a creation from the Pantone Universe, it is of course, the Pantone mug! They can be bought either individually or as a palette of colours, ‘Yellow C’, ‘Process Blue C’ all the way down to ‘Orange 021 C.’ The simple design is timeless, and is a must have for any designer to look the part whist thinking over their latest work. To look at the mugs (and the espresso collection) click here!
4. Number four has to be (as childish as it seems) the Mr Men mug collection! For both the young, the old and those in between the Mr Men books will have, at some point, impacted on us. Everyone I’ve asked has always had a favourite character and who wouldn’t want that character on their mug in the morning? (Besides Mr. Grumpy) To buy your favourite little Mr. Man or Little Miss follow the link here
5. Now, number five may not be as exciting as the Mr. Men that preceded it however it is very, very cool in its own right. The Ardoise mug by virages is a mug and a blackboard, so you need never forget that thing you had to do in the morning again! The french company make the mug in different coloured slates and even supply you with 3 chalk sticks to get you going. Check it out at their site here!
POP Phone!
Native Union and French designer David Turpin have teamed together to create the Moshi Moshi POP Phone, a brilliant little handset that can plug into your iPhone, iPad or computer via the 3.5mm MP3 jack. It has a classic shape and style with a unique finish, the soft texture on the outside adds some new flavour to the familiar shape and the ‘end call’ button in the middle makes the phone feel well built, makes it practical and also make it look as good as it feels. The microphone and speakers aren’t anything very special and speaking and listening through it dosen’t particuarly enhance the quality of the call. I was lucky enough to get my hands on a bright red one of these last May and I use it for every call I can, be it a Skype call or a mobile call there is definately something special about using a handset rather as opposed to a hands free device or just your regular phone. I love it, it’s reasonably cheap and although it is something of a novelty it is practical and it does look damn cool. To have a look, you can visit the website here!
Diana F+
A blast from the past this is the old Diana F+ camera from the 1960’s remade! Lomography, the world renowned maker of retro cameras has taken it upon themselves to create this old classic. It is essentially the same design and model that was around when it first came out however Lomo have made a few ‘tweaks’ to take out a few imperfections and enhance performance. You still have the ability to roll ahead on the film as much or as little as you desire to create panoramic’s or overlap images and there is also a 35mm back available as 120mm film can be a little expensive nowadays! It’s also very cheap for the basic model at just £35, however, you may also want the 35mm back and the flash to add, which can total up to, a still fairly reasonable – £110. There is however, another option, Lomography have also created the Diana Mini, this is just like its big sister but half the size – it packs a fantastic 72 shots onto one roll of 35mm film! To get a flash on this little thing you’ll need a flash adaptor which is £6 but that’s not too bad. Both cameras produce brilliant results very easily and they are both brilliant ways to easily get in touch with your creative side and go wild! To see the Diana F+ click here and for the Diana mini click here!
David McCandless
I’ve recently come into the possession of David McCandless’ book Information is beautiful and I am in love with it. The designs within are inspired and are all brilliant visualizations of huge amounts of information and data that McCandless has accumulated over the years. I thoroughly recommend that you buy yourself a copy if not for the information (some of which is quite shocking) then for the designs themselves! He is a very clever and inspiring man who has become very famous through doing something that is actually very simple but doing it very well. To see more of him talking about himself and what he does at a TED conference click here. Also if you just want his website about him click here.
Sagmeisters site
The mighty Stefan Sagmeister has recently made a few changes to his website – a few very daring changes, the main one being that the homepage is actually a like webcam link to his office in New York! On the floor he is either projecting or has physically drawn the menu with ‘work’, ‘store’, ‘news’ and all of that and they all link to that part of the page. I’ve never seen him actually in their but I presume if you stayed on it long enough you would eventually. I very much like the idea and cannot wait to catch him out live over in New York! To visit the site click here!
The Pantone Hotel
Would you believe it, Pantone, the humble colour palette now has a hotel to his name! Located in Brussels the Pantone hotel consists of 59 rooms (in a selection of colour themes), two large meeting rooms and a ‘chic’ rooftop bar/lounge. I personally can’t think of a cooler way to visit Brussels or anywhere for that matter, especially when you could tour the city on this baby – so if you want to spend a fairly reasonable €109 for you and a friend to visit for the weekend, check it out here!
Drawing Day 2011
Have you taken the day off? Got all your pencils into a nice little pile and been practicing your shading techniques? Well, I hope so because Drawing Day 2011 is coming to the world soon, the 4th of June to be exact, and what an exciting occasion it is! Personally I had never heard of it before but I do like the idea, the website suggests various ways of submitting work to the internet such as YouTube, Facebook and Deviantart. There is also something called ‘Rate my Drawings’ – I’m not quite sure what that’s about but they do also have a few ways of posting your work up to the actual website gallery and therefore be in with a chance to be in the Drawing Day 2011 book! So sharpen those pencils and think hard, they want one million drawings drawn this year! To visit the website for more info click here.
This week’s top six…
Another top six for you this week with lots and lots of new talent!
1. Firstly, at number one we have the Swimming Song by the brilliant folk band Vetiver. I have a great love for this song mainly because of its presense in a video that is very close to my heart, a video about the Original Pintail Longboard that I own! To listen to the song click here.
2. Secondly, number two is another acoustic song by City and Colour called Sleeping Sickness. His voice his haunting and the simple chords are equally effective. The lyrics in all of his songs are fantastic and are all well worth a good listen – which you can do here.
3. Thirdly, we have the band Egyptian Hip Hop with their song Rad Pitt. Indie/Electronic beats and synths with an excellent singer and some incredibly unique effects! To listen to this song visit here!
4. At number four is a song by the brilliant Australian duo Gypsy and the Cat and their song The Piper’s Song. Another indie and very different sound with nothing much like it around! To watch it click here!
5. Number five is from a band everyone should have heard of by now… Everything Everything have won many awards for their unique sounds and my favourite song of theirs at the moment has to be Schoolin. I have never heard anything like this and am thrilled at the prospect of more from these guys, listen to them here!
6. Lastly is the simply brilliant song by Bon Iver called Flume. He has a huge body of work with many a succesful album to his name however this song and the flim for it really does reflect what he’s all about. He’s also going on tour soon, to check out dates and venues vist his myspace! To watch the music video go to here!
Thomas Dybdahl
Aside from being a brilliant acoustic musician Thomas Dybdahl has a kick-ass website, made in flash and done well. Very well. In fact, it appears to have won an ‘Mixmaster Solutions’ who’s portfolio is actually quite impressive, check it out!
Nyan Cat
The pop tart cat is BACK! A massive come back for the Nyan Cat has taken my Facebook stream by storm. A looped animation of a pop tart cat who likes to ride rainbows, listen to some rather garish synth all in the comfort of 8 bits – continuously. Love it or hate it, it’s made a terrific comeback! There is also a game if you fancy becoming the Nyan Cat! To check him out go here!
Physalia studio
F5 2011 RE:PLAY Film Festival. Inductance from Physalia Studio on Vimeo
“Happy” was the one word brief that this team was given by the organizers for the F5 Re:Play Fest, I think the guys and gal’s over at Physalia studio succeeded with that brief… perfectly
Todd Richardson
Todd Richardson is a very talented and relatively new photographer, much like Laurent Nivalle he uses a range of 60’s filters to a very retro and unique end effect. He does a bit fashion photography too, however my favourite part of his work has to be the ‘Made by Originals’ which looks to be very impressive! To check out more of his work click here!
Everynone films
Everynone is a very talented film-making team from New York with a very unique and artistic style. Their short film called ‘Symmetry’ is my personal favourite however their two ‘WORDS’ videos are also intriguing. They use the short films clips almost as pictures to depict something other than their face value and eventually build up the tension to some sort of climax, it is very, very clever. Symmetry especially, the use of music, dialogue and those short clips build up to the ultimate difference in the end which can be quite haunting but equally mesmerizing. These guys haven’t produced much in the way of a portfolio yet but they are definitely one to watch!
This week’s top six tunes…
I’ve decided to start up something new on Kakaaa! It’s my top six songs of the week! What I’ve been listening too, what I think you should listen to etc…
1. Firstly, at number one there is Paris by the Friendly Fires but the Aeroplane remixed version, it is a fantastic song and I’ve been listening to it non stop ALL WEEK! To listen to this fantastically electronic version of an already great song go here.
2. Secondly, number two is the beautiful To build a home by the Cinematic Orchestra. A fairly old song but it never ceases to amaze me, and especially relevant as I now have the sheet music for it! You may also have seen it (if you have sky) in the old Sky Atlantic commercials, anyway, you can listen to it here.
3. Thirdly, we have the french band ‘Justice’ (recently featured on the new Adidas ads) with their song D.A.N.C.E, again, a relatively old song but having seen the video for it just a few days ago it won’t get out of my head! A brilliant song with an even better music video, check it out here!
4. At number four is a song by Radical Face called ‘Welcome Home, Son’. An acoustic set, with Ben Cooper’s amazing vocals to lead. The song was also recently used in the Nikon ‘Coolpix’ ads! To listen to the song and watch an interesting video for the song made by Justin Mitchell, click here!
5. Number five is Household Goods by Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs! I saw this guy live a few months ago (supporting Darwin Deez) and have been mad about him since. He is so good both to watch on stage and listen to in the comfort of my home, his tunes are like nothing I’ve heard before, so catchy! Click the, here! to check out both the song and some interesting headgear.
6. Last, but by no means least, at number six is the song ‘Loud Pipes’ by Ratatat! (Such a cool name) This electronic riff is genius, even if slightly repetitive, you will definitely be sucked in to listen the whole way through. I apologize for the music quality on this one, but I couldn’t find anything better, to listen to this awesome song click here!
Apple’s new iPad Ad
For the most part, I love Apple, and In my books Apple’s had a very creative advertising history with the Shuffle adverts back in 2005 (featuring “Jerk It Out” By The Caesars) and the more recent iPod touch ad’s. However, the current iPad ad that Apple is dishing out is bad, very bad. Apple have now become so huge they’ve got their R&D department looking into sorcery who appear to have succeeded as now all Apple products are ‘Magical’. I want the ad’s like this back, with Louis Armstrong and a man who hasn’t had his hands genetically airbrushed. Or the ad’s where it was just product, music, logo. Quick, simple and easy to understand. This whole new ‘We Believe’ stuff doesn’t seem very “Apple” and it looks to me as if they’ve taken a step backwards with their marketing. Maybe Job’s has set off on some new spiritual venture but somehow I doubt it… All I can do is cross my fingers and hope this is a momentary blip and we shan’t be seeing any more of this in the future
Good work at YouTube
Youtube is planning to team up with creatives everywhere to, once again help out charities all over the world! Various non-profit organizations have submitted a brief to the competition in the hope that some young creative will make them a horribly inspiring advert for free! However, as a bit more of an incentive, the creator of the best ad will bag themselves a ticket to the Cannes Lions International Festival Of Creativity, courtesy of YouTube. Very exciting and a brilliant opportunity. My favourite so far has to be the ‘Sound School – Emergency’ entry, (Unfortunately they appear to have built the site in flash so I can’t send you a link but search for it!) The deadline is at midnight tonight so watch out for the surge of entries that, I’m sure, can be expected to be posted up this evening.
Google Art Project
Over the past 18 months Google have been getting involved in the big wide world of art creating their latest concoction, the ‘Google Art Project’. Inventive name, huh? This is basically a street view camera used in an art gallery, the idea being you can walk around and have that ‘gallery experience’ from the comfort of your home. The really impressive part is that they have also uploaded selected pieces at an incredibly high resolution, 17 gigapixels (7,000 migapixels) to be exact.
The results are stunning, to check it out visit the site here
O’Clock Watch
I came across the O’CLOCK Watch whilst on a visit to Spain in the holidays, a beautifully simplistic design at only €20. The watch faces can be taken out of the strap and are interchangeable with other sizes and colours. Straps cost €6 individually and are made out of good quality rubber and come in an assortment of well picked colours. The unique packaging is also an eye-catcher, a tin can of all things! I love the philosophy and design of ‘Fullspot’ and hope all of you can spare the €20 (£17) to buy your own O’CLOCK Watch!
For more information check out the website
Clever hand-held storage devices
An assortment of clever and creative bag designs for you here – both fashionable and functional we have a bunch of them for you to look at! Even more in the Facebook album!
Kitsune
Kitsune is a group of french people who have an impeccable taste in both fashion and music. They have made countless albums collecting the best in electronic and indie music from all over the world with various remixes too. Their album covers are what caught my attention and is what lead me to them, the faces scribbled on the cover is a brilliant idea and a theme that runs throughout their entire collection! The kitsune shop is their fashion side of things with tremendously expensive (but equally cool) fashion for both men and women. There is an online shop if you have the money however with scarves priced at €220,00 part of me thinks it may be quite a stretch! Their general website can be found here for those wishing to take a look.
